Foraging forecast: Astrakhan Oblast

Not yet: conditions in Astrakhan Oblast in September 2026 are poor, index 14 out of 100. Going on the off chance is not worth it — watch the next few days, a flush can start once the rain arrives.

A seven-day index for the species whose records are confirmed here — 7 of them right now. Flush phases and the factors behind the number, instead of a "chance of finding" percentage we cannot measure. Data updated 18 September 2026, 11:37 BST.

The map is built from the measurement network — one point per sizeable town and more in between. A detailed 2.5 km grid is computed for one region so far: it needs its own run for every cell.

Biting insects: blackfly — noticeable. What to bring.

Numbers are taken at the measurement point nearest the centre of the region — a real calculation at one place, not an average over the whole area. A town an hour away will read differently, and its own page says so.

Calendar: what to pick and when

Fruiting dates for this region. This is a long-run norm, not a forecast for today: no two years are alike, and “usually from mid-July” does not mean “this July”. What is happening right now is above, in the forecast.

In season by the calendar: honey fungus, lactarius resimus, sheathed woodtuft, field mushroom, fairy ring champignon, stinking brittlegill. Coming up: oyster mushroom.

The dates come from field observations — in this region, in its vegetation zone, or across the country; each species says which. The calendar does not replace an identification guide: edibility and dangerous lookalikes are on the species page.

What is recorded in Astrakhan Oblast

Species recorded within the region across all observations, from the most common to the rarest. Beside each one, the dates it is found here. Some are marked “by vegetation zone”: there are few records in this region itself, but enough in neighbouring ones with the same kind of woodland.

Occurrence data comes from GBIF, an open database of biodiversity observations. These are records made by people, not a census of fungi: where there are more naturalists, there are more records. So the number says how often a species turns up in reports, not how much of it is in the woods.

Common questions

Are there mushrooms in Astrakhan Oblast in September 2026?

Not yet: conditions in Astrakhan Oblast in September 2026 are poor, index 14 out of 100. Going on the off chance is not worth it — watch the next few days, a flush can start once the rain arrives.

Which mushrooms are out in Astrakhan Oblast right now?

Records here most often list: honey fungus, oyster mushroom, sheathed woodtuft. Each has its own fruiting window, given in the calendar on this page.

How is the index calculated?

An index from 0 to 100, built from the last month of weather, satellite woodland data, terrain and the seasonal window of each species. It is not a probability of finding anything: it is how well conditions match what that species needs.

When is the best day to go in Astrakhan Oblast?

Use the seven-day index on this page: pick the day with the higher number, and watch the flush phase — «Building» and «Peak» are the ones worth the drive. Today reads 14 out of 100.

The index is high but I found nothing — why?

The index reads weather and season — things that are the same for tens of kilometres around. It does not know your particular wood, and that is where the mushroom grows. The usual reasons: wrong trees — every species has its own, and no weather makes up for the wrong stand; the wood was felled recently or is young — the mycelium takes years to recover; the spot is picked out — everything near a road or a car park goes over a weekend; the flush has been taken — you came a day after those who came on time; or the flush passed and slugs and larvae got there first, which the model cannot see. The reverse holds too: a low index does not mean an empty wood. It means the conditions are against you, not that there is nothing there.

How the index is calculated, and what the model cannot promise — on the about page.
