Where to look: velvet shank

A field over the measurement network. The colour here is for the leading species at each point, not for this one; a per-species layer is computed for one region so far.

About the species. Edible when correctly identified and cooked, but it grows on wood alongside other small brown mushrooms, including the deadly Funeral Bell. Velvet Shank usually has no ring and has a dark, velvety lower stem. Funeral Bell often shows rusty-brown spores and a ring zone. These clues are not enough for a beginner to make a safe identification.

A regional boundary means nothing to a mushroom, and the next region is sometimes closer than the far side of your own. The index is for today.
