Wood Blewit in Branicevski: where to look

Wood Blewit: the species in brief
How to tell it
Fresh specimens are violet to lilac across the cap, gills and stem, fading towards buff or brown with age. The spore print is pale rather than rusty brown. The smell is often sweet or fruity.
Where it grows
In leaf litter in broadleaved and mixed woodland, hedgerows, parks and piles of decaying leaves.
In the kitchen
Cook thoroughly. It can be fried, stewed or preserved; much of the violet colour fades during cooking.
Nutrition
Low in calories. It is valued mainly for its late season and abundance.
