A pale buff to greyish cap on a thick lilac or violet stem. The contrast between the pale cap and coloured stem is characteristic, but should not be used as the only identification feature.
Where it grows
On pasture, downland, grassy commons, garden edges and other open, nutrient-rich ground.

Cook thoroughly. The flesh is firm and works well fried, stewed or preserved.
