Where to look: sheathed woodtuft

About the species. Edible, but not suitable for beginners. The deadly Funeral Bell (Galerina marginata) can grow on the same wood, at the same time, and can look very similar. The two may even occur close together. Do not rely on photographs or one field mark to separate them.

Sheathed Woodtuft: the species in brief

How to tell it

Grows in dense clusters on dead wood. The cap is often two-toned, with a darker wet-looking outer band in damp weather. A thin ring may be present on the stem, but it can disappear on older specimens.

Where it grows

Mostly on stumps and fallen wood of broadleaved trees, occasionally on conifers.

In the kitchen

Where it is traditionally collected, it is thoroughly cooked before use. Because of the risk of confusion with Funeral Bell, this is a species for experienced foragers only.

Nutrition

Low in calories.
