Where to look: red cracking bolete

A field over the measurement network. The colour here is for the leading species at each point, not for this one; a per-species layer is computed for one region so far.

About the species. Edible when correctly identified and cooked. The pores and flesh can bruise blue-green. Older fruitbodies become soft quickly and are best left.

Red Cracking Bolete: the species in brief

How to tell it

A small bolete with a dry, velvety olive-brown cap. As the cap expands it often cracks, revealing pinkish or reddish flesh beneath. The pores are yellow and bruise blue-green.

Where it grows

In broadleaved and mixed woodland, on mossy banks, woodland edges and beside tracks.

In the kitchen

Best used young. It can be fried or added to mixed mushroom dishes but is softer and less strongly flavoured than Penny Bun.

Nutrition

Low in calories.
